Abstract: Objective To analyze the muscle strength of upper and lower limbs in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by using isokinetic testing. Methods The flexors and extensors of the elbow and knee in 87 patients with COPD (experimental group, mild 17, moderate 44, severe 26) and those in 34 healthy subjects (control group) were assessed by using isokinetic testing. The flexion and extension muscle peak torque (PT) of elbow and knee at angular velocity 60°/s and 180°/s were recorded respectively. The fatigue index of lower limb flexor and extensor muscles was also calculated respectively.  Results The muscle PT of elbow flexion and extension in experimental group were (20.56±7.54) Nm and (22.61±9.26) Nm respectively, the muscle PT of knee flexion and extension in experimental group were (35.78±16.99) Nm and (71.86±27.98) Nm respectively, which were lower than those of in the control group (P<0.05). The fatigue index of lower limb flexor and extensor muscles in experimental group was lower than that of in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusions Isokinetic muscle testing can be used as a method to analyze the changes of peripheral muscle strength in patients with COPD.
